July Favourites 2014

Thursday 31 July 2014

Since July has come and gone I thought it was time to post my July favourites for 2014. If you are unfamiliar with these type of posts, Its where I tell you all the products, movies, food, books, trends...just about anything that I've been loving over the past month.

I wont be doing these posts every single month simply because I don't have new finds every month. You can expect an updated favourites post from me every few months.
Monthly favourites are a great way to learn about some new products that people really love and for you all to learn a little bit more about me.

So lets hope right in!

My first favourite for the month is the Macadamia Deep Repair Masque. I've been using this product for a few months now and just LOVE how healthy it has made my hair. I adore everything about this product: The packaging, the scent, the results. I only wish it was cheaper over here in Australia. A wonderful product I really recommend!

http://www.vivaglamx3.be/?p=4193

I had been using Bioderma crealine H2O for a while now (since it was first stocked in Priceline in Australia) and thought it was an okay product. I didn't really understand the hype about the product until this past month. In July, I began to notice a considerable difference in my skin when using this product. For those of you who aren't aware, it is a micellar cleansing water designed to remove makeup and clean your skin. The product itself is light and refreshing on the skin which I absolutely love. Would certainly recommend this product to anyone who is considering trying it.

Another favourite of mine has been the Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner. I had been using this product for a while not even realising that I liked it. It only dawned upon me when I lost it and had to use some of my other liners- None of them compared to this one of course. The flexible tip just makes it so easy to get that perfect flick. I'll be purchasing a new one very soon!

In Australia, July days are cold and wet which isn't always that fun. To cope with the climate, I've been having plenty of warm soup- In particular chicken and veggie. I have a wonderful recipe I look forward to sharing with you all in the future if that's something you'd like!

I've been completely obsessed with Modern Family this past month!
I even went and watched every episode from the beginning: I find that it's the kind of show where you can lose yourself and watch a whole season in a day.
The end of season 5 left me hanging out for the next, I'm just so darn excited to see what happens!

In July I discovered Madilyn Bailey on YouTube and just fell in love with her videos! Madilyn is a singer/songwriter who uploads covers of popular songs as well as original songs. Her channel has almost 1.5 million subscribers. I first found her cover of 'Chandelier' by Sia and subscribed straight away. Please go over and give her channel some love!

And finally, my last favourite for the month has got to be 'Happy little pill' by Troye Sivan. Troye is another YouTube sensation who has just under 2.5 million subscribers, He's also a fellow Aussie! His album TRXYE is out on August 15 but is available for preorder now. Although his first single 'Happy little pill' was released only a short time ago, its been on repeat ever since. I'm beyond excited to see what's next for Troye.

That's it for my favourites this month! Let me know if you enjoy reading these monthly favourites or if agree with any of my favourites. Also tell me what you've been loving this month, I'd love to hear your thoughts

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, I'll see you back here on Monday for another post

The Liebster Award

Wednesday 30 July 2014

Hey there!

Now you're probably thinking 'Megan, today is Wednesday. why on Earth are you posting?' Well I thought I would add an extra sneaky post this week to celebrate my first month of consistent blogging! (Yay me!)
I thought what better post to do than the Liebster award!

I was so excited to see that I had been nominated not once, but twice! It seemed like a fun little post and a great way to get to know other bloggers!
If you are unfamiliar with this tag post (like I was when I was nominated!) here are the rules:

1. You must link back to the person who nominated you.
2. You have to answer all the questions you were given by the person who nominated you.
3. You must choose 5-11 bloggers who have less than 200 followers, and come up with a new set of 11 questions for them.
4. Let your nominees know they’ve been nominated.

Lets get started!

I was nominated for the Liebster Award by Hannah from Hannah bakes things, as well as Sarah from A bubbly lady. Thankyou ladies!

Hannah's questions:

 1. How did you start blogging?
I've briefly covered this in one of my first posts. Starting a blog was something I had been thinking about doing for about 8 or 9 months. 'Room with a Bloom' was originally meant to be dedicated to interior design. My passions grew and the blog became what it is today. I remember being terrified to actually start because I thought it needed to be perfect. Eventually I realized that it would never be perfect and I just needed to trust that I will become better at writing over time. I hope I've answered this question right!

2. Where do you find your inspiration?
Absolutely everywhere! The smallest things can give me inspiration. I am a Pinterest addict and can spend hours pinning to my hearts desire. I often find great DIY ideas and organisation tips on there. I also get inspired by looking at other blogs- There are some seriously talented and inspirational people in this world!

3. What is your favourite kind of cake?
I'll have to go with Mud cake, Who doesn't love mud cake?

4. What is the best joke you know?

I'm such a sucker for corny jokes!

Q: What did Barack Obama say to Michelle when he proposed?
A: "I don't want to be Obama self."

5. What kind of camera do you use?
Currently I'm just using the camera on my IPhone 5 for taking pictures. Its not ideal but I'm working with the best I have. But don't worry, a good quality camera is at the top of my wish list. Does anyone have any recommendations?

6. What's made you smile today?
Watching the SacconeJoly's newest vlog: Seeing Emilia and Eduardo learn and grow everyday always seems to make me smile!

7. If you could have a super power what would it be?
This was a hard one. I think I'd want to have the power to transport anywhere I wished. There have been so many times that I've been rushing to the train and missed it by seconds. If only I had the power to transport myself onto the train... But then again, if I could transport anywhere, I wouldn't need to catch the train: I could just transport to my destination!

8. What are your favourite kind of posts to write?
My favourite by far are DIY posts, Its just so much fun creating little projects and sharing them with you all!

9. What is your favourite film?
Like a large percentage of the female population, I too am a huge fan of 'The Notebook'- Makes me cry every time!
I also currently really love 'The heat'- Melissa McCarthy is just so hilarious!

10. What couldn't you live without?
Tea- A cuppa and some toast for brekkie is just my favourite way to start each day!

11. What are your favourite blogs?
Zoella- Im sure you all know her! Zoe is an English fashion and beauty blogger/ vlogger and has been a huge inspiration to me for a couple of years now. I just adore her style!
Little Miss Katy- Katy is an English beauty and fashion blogger with incredible style! I can spend forever just reading her posts!
The Magpie Girl- Vicki is an Irish fashion blogger. She's absolutely stunning and I love the theme for her blog: Its just so darn pretty! Amazing content too!
A Joyful Kind of Life Rosy posts about everything and anything that makes her happy! I've only just discovered her but love her already!
Little Miss Momma- This is one I find myself checking back to most days. Ashley's lifestyle blog features posts on crafts, style, recipes, home and much more! Her little family is adorable too!

Sarah's questions:

1. What is your favourite thing about blogging?
I just love that its my own little space on the internet where I can share my own thoughts and opinions. I also love that it allows me to inspire readers from all over the world!

2. Do you have any pets? If yes, how many?
I have a Maltese Shitzu named Maxi, He is so adorable! I couldn't not insert a picture right? This is him when he was just a baby! (Awww)

3. What is your favourite feel good movie?
The blind side: It makes me laugh and it makes me cry. Its just a wonderful story!

4. What is your most worn item of clothing/jewellery?

9. What is your favourite make up brand?
It would probably have to be Nars, I find myself reaching for their products way more than other brands!

10. What is your favourite food to cook?
Italian, Making pasta is so much fun and so delicious as well!

11. What are your life goals?
My main goals are to have a successful job, buy a home in the suburbs, get married and start a family. Its something ive wanted for a really long time.

Chasing Dreams

Monday 28 July 2014

Hello everyone!
This post is a little out of the ordinary for me but getting to know you guys on a more personal level is something I’d really like to do. Today I thought I would just chat to you guys and let you know how I’m feeling about life at this current point in time.
I’d consider myself to be a very ambitious person. I have big dreams and I know what I want in life. Having dreams is just something I’ve always had, and always wanted to have. In my eyes, if you don’t have goals or direction, then you’re not working towards anything.

Recently, my goals have become unclear and suddenly, I feel this life that I’ve been working towards slowly slipping away. Over dramatic? Maybe, but this feeling of being stagnant is very new to me and I find myself often feeling quite anxious and upset.

For the past 4 years, my main goal in life was to become an Interior designer. (This is something I’ve spoken about in one of my first posts but I’ll go into more detail on the subject here) So after I finished high school, I went off to pursue these dreams of mine. I really loved studying the subject and kept dreaming of the day that I would receive my diploma and be ready to enter the workforce. Earlier this year, these dreams began to become nightmares. Here are a few reasons that lead to this:
Firstly, one of my teachers informed the class that there was a high chance that the majority of us would go into working in retail selling furniture rather than actually designing homes. Don’t get me wrong, this I understood. I respect that you need to start from the bottom and pay your dues to get to the top. It was something I certainly wasn’t looking forward to.

Two ladies that had joined the class previously worked in the industry and had come back to refine their knowledge. This sounded pretty good to me; I’d meet new friends who I’d be able to ask questions concerning the life was aiming for. This was not the case. Instead, these ladies had some pretty negative things to say.

Lastly, the course itself just seemed to be really cold. I loved the idea of creating beautiful houses, ones that made you feel warm and safe. However, what I really wanted to do was inspire others to create their own homes and brighten their lives. (I touched on this in an earlier post). The industry just wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. Finding out that I would be working for years selling sofas to working in a negative office environment was certainly not how I wanted to spend my years. I knew I needed to withdraw from the class and have a really good think.

This little corner of the internet quickly became my solution and I love writing for it. It would be an absolute dream for ‘Room With a Bloom’ to become my full time job, A job where I can inspire readers every day. However, at this point it would be ignorant for me to rely on it. So now you are all caught up: I’m currently uneducated, unemployed and can’t help but feel unmotivated and lost.
A part of me is unsure as to why I’m telling you this. Reassurance that I will find my way perhaps?
What do you do when you become lost? Where do you start searching when you're not sure what you're searching for?

I am certain I was put on this earth to inspire others. I know I have enough drive to achieve anything I want. I just hope I can get out of this rut soon and start chasing my dreams again.

This post was really hard for me to write. However I consider this to be a good thing. It means my blog is growing and improving. I’m on the right track to becoming a great writer.
Please leave your thoughts below. Everyone has different views and opinions and I’d love to hear your take on the subject.
Thanks for reading!

Recipe: Snicker's Brownies

Monday 21 July 2014

Hello again my lovely readers!
Over the weekend, some friends and I had a small barbecue for which I was asked to make a dessert. I spent a fair bit of time searching around the internet and found what looked to a be simple, chocolate-y and delicious solution. I thought that since I was making it anyway, I could turn it into a blog post for you all.

Ingredients list:

150g chopped butter (unsalted)
200g chopped dark chocolate
¾ cup Caster sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup plain flour, sifted
¼ cup self-raising flour, sifted
120g (2 ½ snickers bars), cut into 1cm cubes

Method:

1. Grease a slice pan and line with baking paper. (Allow a 2cm overhang)

2. Place butter, dark chocolate and caster sugar in a saucepan over a medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3-5 minutes or until all of the chocolate and butter has melted. Set aside for about 15 to cool.
3. Preheat oven to 180/160-fan forced.

4. Whisk eggs then both flours into chocolate mixture. After the ingredience have combined, fold in the chopped snickers bars.

5. Pour mixture into prepared pan and bake for 25 minutes.

6. Once cool, serve and enjoy!
These brownies went down so well in our group on the weekend- It was the only thing that had completely gone by the end of the night!
Let me know if you make these brownies and how they turned out. Also write in the comments below if there are any recipes you’d love me to make!

D.I.Y Animal lid storage jars

Monday 14 July 2014

Hey there!

I have another DIY post for you today and its one I’m very excited to share with you! I saw these jars on Pinterest (is there anything that you can’t find on Pinterest?) and fell in love! I just had to share this tutorial with you all!

For this project you will need:

  • Assorted sized glass jars with flat lids. (I used old pickle and pasta sauce jars)
  • Assorted plastic animal figurines (You can purchase these from any toy store.)
  • White spray paint primer (Make sure you use one that will bond to the metal as well as plastic.)
  • Spray paint in colours of your choice
  • Strong glue that will adhere to metal and plastic.

Let’s begin!

Step 1: Soak the jars in warm water and soap until the labels start to peel off. Scrape off any remaining residue from the labels. If you are using jars that don’t have labels, you can skip this step.

Step 2: Prime the lids using your spray paint primer. One coat should cover it, but a second coat may be necessary if the paint appears streaky.  Make sure the paint is fully dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Now lightly spray the lids at all angles with the coloured paint to get a light even coverage. For lighter shades, you may need to do 2 coats so the colour comes out opaque. Allow time for the paint to fully dry.

Step 4: Using your glue, stick the figure to the centre of the jar lid. Again, allow drying time.

Step 5: Fill your jars with whatever you like..

The possibilities are endless!

These jars look adorable in the home and they were so easy to make! They’d also make great gifts when filled with little treasures! If you try these, be sure to show me pictures by tagging me on Twitter or on Facebook! I’d love to see how they turned out!

D.I.Y Washi tape peg clips

Thursday 10 July 2014

Hello lovely readers, today I have a really simple and cute DIY for you all!

I love to pin up pictures and notes on my inspiration board but hate leaving the pages with those little holes! I saw this DIY on Pinterest and thought that it was a really cute solution to my annoying problem. Keep reading and I’ll show you how you can make these adorable and practical clips in just TWO easy steps!

For this project you will need:

  • Wooden pegs
  • Push pins and/or Magnets
  • Washi tape of assorted designs
  • Utility knife or scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue

Let’s get started!

Step 1: Attach Washi tape to one side of the clothes peg. The washi tape is a bit wider than the width of the peg, so here is where you’ll use either your knife or (if you’re precise enough) your scissors to cut the excess tape off.

Step 2: Using your hot glue gun, glue your push pin to the centre of the back of the clothes peg. You could also use a magnet in place of the pin for a clip that can stick on your fridge!

Now we’re done, told you it was easy!

Let me know if you end up making these little pegs over the weekend! I’d love to see pictures of your little creations! Also tell me if there are any DIY projects you'd like me to make a post on, I'm always looking for new craft ideas! Thanks for reading!

Simple steps to upkeeping your home this winter

Monday 7 July 2014

Hello, I trust you all are doing well? :)

Ever notice that the home starts to fall apart as the months get colder? I know I'd rather be snuggled up with a warm blanket than fussing with housework. I decided a few weeks ago that I would take some simple steps each day to improve the state of the house. I definantly found these steps helpful and they didn't take much time at all. I thought I'd share these tips with you today and see how you all get on with it!

1. The one minute rule:
This one is simple. Its easy to rationalize doing chores when they only take 60 seconds to complete. If I see something that needs doing, I ask myself this question: Can I get it done in one minute. If the answer is yes, then it would almost look lazy if you didn’t do it! Its an easy way to get small tasks done and feel as though you’ve accomplished something. (5 tasks in 5 minutes really isn't that bad)

2. Make sure everything has a place, and that everything is in its place:
I find that things get cluttered and messy quickly when they don't have a home. Something I often need to remind myself is that a pile of books in the corner of the room is not a suitable home! Make sure that you know where everything should go- then when things do get a little crazy (which they will, that's life!), you'll be able to incorporate the first rule to get things sorted much quicker!

3. Make the bed:
This rule may be obvious to you. Our mothers have been drilling it into our heads since we could walk! However it’s a step that can often be overlooked especially during the colder months. There are many days I don't bother with it because I know I’ll be climbing back into the bed to watch a movie. I always feel more accomplished after making my bed, perhaps since its the biggest component of the room. Its also the best feeling climbing into a made bed at the end of the day- who wouldn't want that?

4. Clean up as you go:
Getting in the habit of doing this will save you time and will keep your home clean and organized. Washing dishes as you cook will allow you to sit and relax after a meal without the stress of a large pile of dishes that await.
I hope these tips help you with staying organised around the home this winter! Remember to let me know if you’ve got any simple tips that work for you or if you try out any of my tips!
